Goals for 2019

In life, we all have goals. As we approach the new year, I always make goals for myself that will help me become a better person and take even more control over my Crohn’s.

1. Listen to my body

Having Crohn’s is all about listening to your body. If you don’t feel good, you have to take care of yourself. A few weeks ago I wasn’t feeling too well, and I thought I had a touch of food poisoning. I made it through the night (with no sleep, and in and out of the restroom), but forced myself to go to work. I did not listen to my body and got really sick at school. I didn’t go to the hospital, but I called my doctor and he told me to stay home and rest. I was having a small flare-up which went away quickly. Don’t make yourself sicker by not listening to your body.

2. Become more involved

Last year, the planning of my wedding didn’t allow me to become as involved as I wanted to with the CCFA-Take Steps walk. My team and I raise a lot of money each year to donate to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. I also volunteer down at the walk. This upcoming year, I wish to raise the most money in my twelve-year history with the foundation. I also want to make sure I offer my services to assist event planners. Remember the more money we raise, the more research can be done to finally find a cure for inflammatory bowel diseases.

3. Continue with vegetables

Over the last year, I have been writing about introducing more of a variety of food to my diet. Some foods my body agrees with and I do just fine, and there are other foods that my body does not agree with. I have introduced more red meat into my diet, to add a variety of protein. Just like I stated above, listen to your body. I think the more you expand your diet, the better you will enjoy eating. If you are anxious about starting a new food and running to the bathroom, then try it when you are at home. Try it on a weekend, or a time where you don’t have to leave your house.

4. Get off some medication

This last one is a stretch. I hate taking medication, but I know that some are vital for my remission with Crohn’s. For years I had to take high doses of steroids and was able to get off of it. I know that I won’t be able to stop taking the injections (Humira), but some of the other medications such as potassium and Nexium, I am going to try to decrease. The only reason why I am taking potassium is to keep my electrolytes in sync, but my last blood results showed that everything was good. My absorption rate is pretty good, so this is the first medication I will try to get off. If I notice a difference. I will go back on.

Overall, I want to make changes for the new year. Happy and Healthy New Year everyone.
