Treatment options besides biologics

Hi All,

Just hoping to get some information on different treatment options besides biologics for Crohn's Disease. I was diagnosed a little over a year ago. Started on Mesalamine for about 8 months, but I was still symptomatic. My GI switched me to Sulfasalazine which worked great for the Crohn's, but I'm fairly certain it's the main reason I've been having 13 - 15 migraine days a month! I go back to my GI on Monday and I'm really nervous he's going to want to put me on a biologic! Are there any other treatment options besides biologics that have worked for you?

Thanks so much for your help!

  1. Don't be nervous about the potential of a biologic. My quality of life has increased so much & I honestly wouldn't be living without them.

Just be open to what your GI/specialist has to say. And ask questions! Best of luck - please keep us in touch!

    1. Hi

Besides biologic, I control my symptoms through diet and supplements. I cut out grains, dairy and processed sugar. I also drink 16oz of celery juice every single morning. I take probiotics, along with any supplement I need.

I will say, if your symptoms are severe, biologics really help. Don't be afraid of them. They can be an amazing tool in getting your body back to functioning.

      Hope this helps!

      1. Hi everyone

so my 16 year old has been diagnosed with moderate to severe crohns. He got a tummy bug last sept which lasted 10 days and lost 4 kilos. After that was fine but the weight never went back on and started to look pale. In March done scopes and got diagnosed. He had to do 6 week liquid diet and got into remission. Now hospital have said his calprotecin and cpr up again and want to start Humira. Has absolutely no symptoms and he’s fuming! I understand inflammation needs to be controlled but a biologic seems extreme ... am I wrong? Sorry this is all new to me even though 30 years ago I was told I had crohns and was sent home with a diet sheet and no meds!

        1. Hi ,

I'm so sorry your son is going through this. I understand your frustration about doctors wanting him to get on a biologic. Inflammation is definitely something you want to be careful with and try to control. However, there are other options out there besides a biologic. I would definitely advocate for your son and let his doctor know that you would like to explore other options rather than a biologic. Here is a link to a list of medications for IBD. It could be a reference to discuss with his doctor. https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/treatment/medications/
