Safe Foods Video

Today I come to you from my kitchen to discuss Pandora’s box – eating when you’re in a flare.

One of the posts I made regarding safe foods got a lot of attention and I was so surprised to hear some community members say things that were so different.

(Safe foods might include: mash potatoes, bread, rice, etc.)

What are your safe foods and how do you work to get calories in your diet when you are ill?

    Safe foods will be so different for each person. Getting food allergy testing done is super key. In your video you said you tested high for eggs, but you said eggs seem to be ok for you. That might not be true, a reaction might not be immediate. If your eating eggs one day and feel ok that day, note how you feel the following day. A reaction can occur even right before elimination. When I have a flare, IBD or Crohn’s, the foods I eat are based on their ability to digest easy. For example, if what your going to eat is put in water, will it mush, will it dissolve. I stay away from meat, it take so much more effort to digest meat. At least until the flare if down. Carbs are my go to, bread, cream of wheat, potatoes, rice, then I will add some cheese, avocado’s, even mashed on toast, and canned fruit drained, mostly pears and peaches, they are the easiest to digest.

    Thanks so much for your comment, Peedy! I agree with a lot you said & agree that the reaction to my unsafe foods might not be immediate. I’m a carb eater only when I’m flaring.

    Great video, I appreciate it. My “safe” foods are bananas, plain noodles, plain chicken breast, breads, and “processed” foods. With two small bowel resections lots of fat is not good for me!
    However, soft drinks seem to work for me too.
    I am surprised by your eating peanut butter. Too much of it is well, not good for me. Thanks!

    I’m also a processed food is safe food for me as well. Do you hate it as much as I do? It doesn’t contribute to the stigma that is already there for uneducated folks who still believe it’s our fault.

    Peanut butter is also new for me. I think I was desperate after not being able to eat any solids for months and I’m craving things now..

    Great video!

    My safe foods are: baked potato, organic chicken, fish, turkey, grain free crackers, pineapple, bone broth, and chicken broth.

    I love the idea of “safe foods” and have my clients identify them all the time so that in addition to feeling physically well when eating them, we feel better emotionally knowing there is at least one thing we can safely eat!

    My go-to safe foods are potatoes (not fried!), rice, bananas, gluten free toast with almond butter, and plain baked chicken breasts.
