Awaiting diagnosis

I’m currently awaiting diagnosis with suspected IBD. My stool tests shows both inflammation and blood. However I just had my colonoscopy and it appeared to be clear. I am currently waiting on biopsy results and my MRI results. I was hoping to be diagnosed at the colonoscopy as it has already been months. My symptoms are the following:
Blood
Pus/Mucus
Diarrhoea
Bowel urgency
Pinching/burning sensation right lower abdomen and around belly button
Severe cramping
Nausea/lack of appetite

I’ve tried to look up my symptoms online but it all comes back to IBD. Has anyone else had a clear colonoscopy but still been diagnosed with IBD or can it be something else? I’ve had this on/off for years, the best way I can describe it is like attacks.

  1. Sorry you are having all these symptoms but it does sound like IBD to me.
You can have IBD and have a clear colonoscopy. You could have Crohn's or even microscopic
colitis. If you have microscopic colitis, it should show on the biopsies. It could be gastritis.
Maybe ask your Dr about having an endoscopy or PillCam, or even a small bowel follow-through.
There could be issues in your small intestine which may not show on colonoscopy.
The biopsy and MRI hopefully will give you some answers.
Let us know how you get on.

    1. Hi Vern,

Thank you for your detailed response, I will wait patiently for my mri and biopsy results. I just hope for some progress soon 🤞🏼

      Thanks,
      Amalie

  2. The biopsy can still show IBD even if your colonoscopy was looking clear to the eye. If that comes back normal, I would ask for a Pill Cam test. It could be that you have issues in the small intestine rather than the large intestine. A Pill Cam is what will show the small intestine. -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for you advice, will definitely request this should it come back clear - I appreciate it.

      Thank you,

  3. Hi! I’ve just posted a post with similar experiences to you. I had a normal colonoscopy but still suffering with severe symptoms (worse from when I had the colonoscopy!). My consultant has ordered a small bowel MRI and she said if that’s normal she will do a OGD. Have you had any update with your situation?
