CT scan IBD Crohn’s help

I’m new to all of this, I had three episodes of severe pain, vomiting, and diarrhea this month. My doctor did a CT scan and is sending me to a specialist for IBD Crohn’s. I never got to discuss what the CT results mean. I’m wondering if anyone has had any similar results or experience, and can help me understand what the CT says I have going on before I go in. I will post the results below. I am on 40 mg Prednisone right now. It’s hard for me to not know and stress about what’s causing this. -Thank you

1. Mural thickening and hyperemia of the distal ileum
in the right lower quadrant to the Tl, and the cecum
and appendix. Fluid distention of small bowel loops
proximally. Associated inflammatory stranding of the
adjacent mesentery and mild free fluid in the pelvis.
Findings are most consistent with inflammatory bowel
disease such as Crohn's disease.
2. Mild colonic diverticulosis.
3. Punctate nonobstructing calyceal stone in the upper
pole of the right kidney.

  1. Since I'm not a physician, I wouldn't dare attempt to "translate" results from CT scan. But what I will tell you is if inflammation exists, like it states in #1, then the GI doctor/specialist will more than likely order a colonoscopy. Don't let that scare you. A colonoscopy is truly the only way a doctor can get a good look (via a fiber optic camera) at what's going on in your intestines. A doctor needs to know to what extent the inflammation exists. In the meantime, why stress about the unknown? All that does is make your body and gut feel worse. So, find positive ways to distract yourself in the meantime. Be kind and gentle to your body. If certain foods cause vomiting, diarrhea, or pain, then don't eat them. Eat only bland foods until you get in to see the specialist. Invest in some Immodium AD to treat diarrhea and use a heating pad for the pain. Those are just a few simple approaches until you receive a diagnosis from someone more specialized. I wish you the BEST moving forward! Please stay in touch! We're always here to provide you with emotional support. Hugs to you!--Traci, UC-IBD Team Member
