Diagnosis of a child

Hi there!
For almost a month now, my 9 year old son has been in severe pain. He ended up in the ER and then we went on to see a GI. His blood work shows that his eosinophils are high as well as a sky high IgE (immunoglobulin) count. I have a family history of Crohns, colitis, and celiac disease. So, he had an endoscopy and colonoscopy done last week. The only thing both procedures showed was "congestion, and subtle edema" in his ileum. The biopsy results came back with "focal, minor crypt architecture distortion" in specific parts of his colon. His GI seems to think this is not a marker for IBD and wants to continue to chase the high eosinophils. He is going for a CT scan tomorrow and I'm really hoping for answers. At this point, my son doesn't want to eat because the pain usually comes 1-2 hours after a meal.

In the meantime, I guess I wanted to ask if anyone has had the results and/or symptoms my son has? Just looking for some insight. Thank you!

  1. Hi ,

I can only imagine how difficult it is to see your son in so much pain, especially since your family is very familiar with IBD.

Although I cannot speak from personal experience, I do want to stress the importance of seeking another opinion if you do not get any solid answers from the doctor your son is currently seeing. Getting a proper diagnosis is really tough for IBD and many times, it turns out to be a diagnosis by elimination.

There are also many, many different types of IBD (I'll link a resource below that goes into detail) and a lot of them specifically mention discomfort after eating and I really hope your son is able to get some solid answers and better yet, some relief!

Hopefully some others will chime in who can share some personal experiences, but in the meantime, I'm sending all the positive vibes your way.

    Kindly, Crystal (IBD team)
