Celery Juice: I Always Come Back to You

In 2018, I tried the celery juice craze that was going rampant. It was made viral by "The Medical Medium." He has his own books and is a health-guru type. Say what you want, but when you are desperate to feel better, you try anything once, right?

Well, I was failing all biologics and medications. I was underweight, miserable, and just sick every single day. I looked into celery juice and thought to myself, this wouldn’t hurt to try. I had access to a juicer and buying celery at the grocery store was easy.

I said to myself, to be fair, I would try this every morning for at least 14 days to give it a shot. Again, I was desperate to feel better and nothing was working for me at the time. Well, lo and behold, after about 10 days I started to feel a huge improvement. I was pretty much sold after the 2 weeks and kept at it for about 3 and a half months straight.

Celery juice and IBD symptoms

My pain went away. The bleeding went away. Many of my trigger foods started to not bother me as much, and I was able to get away with eating a larger amount of different types of food. I also had major inflammation in my rectum that was reduced significantly. To be honest, I was extremely impressed with my results. But the key is consistency.

After almost 4 months, I just stopped. Why?  Well, I hate being so honest, but I got lazy. I think one day I just woke up and didn’t feel like juicing the celery and then it turned to 2 days, then 3, and eventually just no more. Sadly, things eventually went back to how they were – just bad. I wasn’t well and always with symptoms.

Fast forward to the end of 2021. I started a new medication which drastically helped me improve my symptoms and feel better, but I still had flares here and there. It’s like I can’t seem to get over this plateau of healing where I reach the point of really, truly feeling better. I get stuck at the point just above feeling average but never feeling great.

Why did I ever stop drinking celery juice?

During a recent flare that was moderate, I asked to be put on prednisone before things got severe. While on a low dose of prednisone, just 20mg, I decided to start the celery juice again. Why did I ever stop it? Ugh, I still am kicking myself for it.

The level of improvement this time around was just a couple of days! Within 5 days I felt so much better. And this time around I was suffering from bad acid reflux. Literally, anything I ate gave me heartburn and I would finish a bottle of Tums within a week. After just a couple of days, my reflux practically disappeared. That was such a win for me! And as the days went by, overall my symptoms improved.

Part of my full IBD treatment plan

I had less urgency. Less mucous in stool. No bleeding. No more vomiting. Major reduction in swelling of the rectum. Improvement in energy. Skin cleared up. Started to gain weight. Also, an easy process of weaning off prednisone. Typically when I would wean off, I would get thrown into a flare. This time around, as I juiced, I was fine. I am now totally off prednisone with no issue.

Of course, before you try anything new, please contact your doctor. But if you are in a rut and need something to help get you feeling better, I suggest giving celery juice a try. I drink 16oz in the morning on an empty stomach then wait 20-30 minutes before you eat breakfast.

Have you tried celery juice before? I’d love to hear about your experience!
