Bowel resection advice.

I would like to hear other peoples experiences regarding bowel resection surgery. Was there an improvement after the initial recovery period after surgery? Do they recommend getting the surgery?

  1. The first resection I had was one of the best moments of my life, starting the very next day despite being sick from nil by mouth and drugs because a year of pain was finally over and I actually slept through a whole night. The recovery was also surprisingly fast, I was home in a week and able to eat normally etc. That was 26 years ago and the surgery and repair techniques have improved greatly since then.

The advice I would give is make sure you know what area they are working on, as it may have knock on effects for the future such as changes to digestion. I can't recommend or not because I'm not a doctor and I don't know the specifics of your case, but if your doctor/surgeon feels it is the best treatment there are probably good reasons.

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful reply, @crohnsperson. I am happy to hear it went well for you and that your life improved almost immediately afterwards. You're right in that everyone is different so consulting with your GI is absolutely essential but thank you for shedding light on your own personal experience.

  2. I talked a little bit about surgery in my latest post: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/surgery-earlier
For me, there's been many ups and downs. I do experience A LOT less pain, and because of my stoma, no more incontinence!
