How can I get help with the cost of my medication?

How can I get into a foundation that can help with the cost of my medication. I am on a Medicare Advantage insurance and can't pay the 20%. Could someone please help answer this question. Thank you.

  1. Hi Renee,

Thank you for your question! I hope our community members will weigh in with their stories and advice but I wanted to pass on a few suggestions as well:

    1. Ask your doctor! Sometimes doctors will have knowledge about options that are available that those living with a condition are unaware of or can help make changes that will make the medications more affordable.

    2. Talk to your insurance company! This one may seem counterintuitive but we have had some community members who have had success talking directly with their insurance provider about the cost of their treatments.

    3. Go direct to the manufacturer! Some medication manufacturers offer patient assistance programs or support programs that include coupons, savings, or other programs that might help.

Let us know what you're able to find and if anything helps!

    1. Hey Renee,

I am also on Medicare and have trouble with that 20%. I just moved out of State but when I lived in Michigan I also had Medicaid in addition to Medicare. That took care of the 20% for me. So that is one option if you qualify. The hospital I am at now is currently working to get me on Medicaid where I moved. I also recommend talking to the Financial Assistance person at your hospital or doctors office. They helped me at each hospital I've been at cover costs I couldn't handle. They can get you approved for medications and stuff and you hardly have to do anything because they do most of the work for you. You can also check out this page http://dansharpibd.org/resources/pharmaceutical-financial-assistance/ that has links to where you can get assistance for various IBD medications. I think the CCFA also has a page like that. I would contact them too and see what they recommend.

      1. Hi Renee, have you tried to speak to your social worker about applying for Medicare Part B? You should qualify for it. There are some patient grants through some hospitals that are funded by private donors for this very reason. If you contact patient services at your hospital, you may be able to get more information.
