Chrons disease but IBS symptoms??

Hi everyone, I have been diagnosed with crohns ileitis. Although everytime I go back to my gastroenterologist they keep saying my crohns is mild and when my recent test results don't show any inflammation, but I am symptomatic my gastroenterologist says it is IBS symptoms.

I'm at a loss. He has said looking over the course of all my results from 2019 to now that it is crohns. I just don't understand why ibs is being brought up and if this is normal.

Has anyone experience similar?

  1. Hi . I don't know if this is what your gastroenterologist is referring, but it is possible for IBD and IBS to occur together. In fact, as noted in this article, the prevalence for IBS in IBD is 40-60%: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4749858. They go on to note that " Furthermore, it is statistically possible, given the high background prevalence of IBS, that some IBD patients would develop IBS de novo while in remission from IBD." Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    1. I guess they are trying to point out that since your Crohn's is mild, the symptoms you are experiencing are more due to IBS which is a syndrome, rather than it being due to a diseased intestine which would be Crohn's.

IBS does not cause structural damage to the intestines. So being that you aren't inflamed or have any ulcers or structural damage to your intestines, I believe they are simply making the distinction that your symptoms are IBS related rather than Crohn's related? I am just thinking out loud here.

I would call your doctors office back regardless, and say you would like your diagnosis to be explained in more depth because you are confused and want more info.
