Constipation with IBD?

Hi,

I suffered with terrible pain in my lower left abdomen and constipation through my teenage years. I did have some scans and got to a point which confirmed I needed a colonoscopy however I then got pregnant and my symptoms pretty much stopped, so my appointments were cancelled.
Now 5 years later after hardly struggling at all this pain has come back to a point where I am unable to look after my children and am not sleeping at night. At first I thought it was just constipation again but after being prescribed many laxatives and only getting short term relief the doctor asked for a stool sample which has come back with elevated inflammation. The doctor told me about IBD and said she was surprised with the results as it usually involves diarrhoea and blood in stool which I do not have. I am now waiting for my referral to gastro and am weirdly desperate for a diagnosis of IBD so that I can actually find some treatment however I am confused as to why I would be struggling so much with constipation. The pain I have is unbearable like someone is squeezing my insides, it feels exactly like bring in labour. My doctor has given me coedine to take for the pain and laxatives if I think I'm constipated but I am worried that I am taking things that are making my symptoms worse. My stomach bloats asif I am 9 months pregnant and the only bowel movement I have is with these laxatives pills which just causes brown water to come out and then the odd very tiny hard stool every now and then. I feel as though there is a brick in my colon and I constantly am not getting something out that is blocking the way.

I just wondered if anyone else has had symptoms like this and been diagnosed with either chrons or UC? Is it possible for me to just have a different type of symptoms to other people if the inflammation is lower in my colon?

Sorry for the long post I am just so desperate to get my life back.

Thanks

I just wondered if any

  1. Hi , Sorry you're having such pain I know it can be frustrating. I have never had constipation with my Crohn's though I know it does happen with some people with ulcerative colitis.
One thing that jumped out to me is that the doctor prescribed you codeine for the pain and while it's great for pain, it is also constipating, so I find that confusing.
When someone with UC has constipation it can be related to inflammation. Have they suggested drinking more water? or increasing your fiber? One thing my GI mentioned to me once was to "train your bowels" to go at certain times of the day whether you had the feeling of going or not. I tried it but with my Crohn's I couldn't keep to the schedule lol.
Hopefully things turn around for you soon.
Let us know how you get on.

    1. how is everything now? Have you been for further testing?
Constipation is 100% a symptom of IBD by the way. We're all different, and many I know have constipation. I also find it odd that you have been prescribed codeine when already constipated, and I'd have been worried, like you!
