Studying with UC

I’m recently diagnosed with UC(April ‘25) and am currently managing my symptoms well with the help of infliximab. I’m currently studying Psychology at university and the uni has been very accepting and helpful in regards to my condition. However, my recent experiences with the hospital and specifically my amazing nurses who have been treating have made me determined to give back to people and pursue nursing myself. I have been given an offer to study Nursing at a good uni although i’m a bit worried they may reject me on health grounds. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced similar or has any advice to help me.

  1. Hi . First, let me say that it is good to hear that you have your UC controlled. I can't personally comment on how nursing schools would react to your condition, but I know we certainly have had community members who are medical professionals. It is wonderful that you have decided to help others by pursuing nursing and I feel confident that your condition won't cause a university to stop you from pursuing it. Although I can't confirm any such thing, I want to share with you this article from a woman with an experience extremely similar to yours - a Crohn's patient whose experience prompted her to become a nurse: https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/blog/becoming-a-nurse-turning-personal-experience-a-career. Hopefully others with first hand knowledge will chime in. Wishing you the best. Richard (Team Member)
