Does this sound familiar?

Hi all,

I am a 54 year old male who never had any symptoms before. Went to Germany on a trip and had massive bloody diarrhoea that wouldn't stop. Went to the emergency room where they were very thorough in their examinations, was admitted and given colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound and blood tests. Their lab result pointed at colitis but further tests were needed, no other conditions were found.

The weekend after I am back home in the UK and on Sunday again massive bleeding even to the extent that I passed out briefly, rushed to hospital where they stabilised me and performed a CT scan to locate the bleeding - inconclusive, they did see a swelling of my large intestine on the right side however.

I am scheduled to see a specialist soon but wanted to ask the forum if my symptoms are consistent with colitis? I know a lot of folks here have very severe symptoms, I don't have any painful cramps, vomiting, fever or joint pains and my weight loss has been minimal.

Would appreciate any insights you have.

Thanks!

S.

  1. Considering that nothing was found in the colonoscopy, maybe you are having issues with internal hemorrhoids? That could explain the bleeding but I feel like that would have been found when you were in the hospital in Germany. I would get a second opinion? Were biopsies taken during your colonoscopy? -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Hi Emily, thank you very much for replying! Yes they did, removed two small polyps but all good. I will request a second colonoscopy as soon as possible.

      1. Yes, I think a second colonoscopy would be a good idea. Let your doctor know to please check for internal hemorrhoids as you are bleeding and want to find the source of the bleeding. -Elizabeth (team member)

    2. I agree with the Elizabeth that internal hemorrhoids should be checked, but bloody diarrhea is definitely the main problem I experience with colits. I've also almost passed out due to anemia. So, please watch your iron levels, too. I hope you find out soon what all is going on. Please update us after your 2nd colonoscopy. Best of luck! --Traci, UC-IBD Team Member.
