Exercise

Hi all!

Hope you are doing well. Question from a relative of mine:

Does anyone else see a flare-up in symptoms due to exercise? Usually doctors say exercise helps for Crohn’s, but I every time I try to begin working out, my stomach flares up.

First this happened to me a few months ago. I had no major issues and was taking minor medication everyday. Then I started working out a lot, 3/4 times a week with running, weights, etc. Then I had all sorts of stomach issues and stopped working out until things settled back to normal

Now, 4 months later, I decided to start working out again, because i listened to what my doctors said, that exercise wouldn’t be the cause of a flare up. I started running, and ran 3 times last week for 30 min, and now I’m having stomach issues again.

Curious if anyone else has ever had a similar experience when trying to work out?

It could be that I have picked up working out at a very rapid pace both times, meaning I went from not working out at all to doing it 2-4 times a week right away, and my body/stomach needs more time to adjust. Perhaps this rapid pace could be the cause?

Any thoughts or insights are much appreciated!

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak to this issue, but I want to share with you this article from our contributor Jenna where she discusses some of the issues she had with exercise and Crohn's: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/crohns-exercise. I also want to call your attention to the comments section for additional experiences. Has your relative had a chance to talk with their doctor about this experience? Best, Richard (Team Member)
