Mild crohns but symptomatic

Hi all. Does anyone have mild crohns with inflammatory levels in normal range, but are still presenting with flare up symptoms? If so, what do you do to manage this?

Not getting much support from my gastroenterologist.

  1. Hi , thanks for reaching out. I apologize that we haven't responded to your message sooner. To answer your question, yes, it is possible to have bloodwork come back in the normal range but still be experiencing symptoms, unfortunately. This article about remission touches on something called biomarker remission, which sounds similar to what you're referring to, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/remission-confusion. You're definitely not the only one who's experienced this, so hopefully some of our community members can chime in here as well.

Also, I'm sorry to hear that you aren't getting much support from your gastroenterologist. I'm not sure if this would be feasible for you, but I wanted to share this article with you about choosing a new doctor, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/choose-new-gastroenterologist. You definitely deserve to have a doctor who listens and supports you when you share your symptoms (and not just make decisions based off of bloodwork results).

Please don't hesitate to reach out here anytime. I do hope that you can get the support you need. Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Hi . I just want to follow up on the excellent information from Christine. My wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with a severe form of a different autoimmune condition at age two, 45 years ago (in her case juvenile idiopathic arthritis). About five years ago she started a medication that finally brought her inflammation numbers into the normal range. Like you, she still gets flares. We had a conversation with her rheumatologist and a medical fellow and they discussed the possibility that there is inflammation that simply is not measured by the existing tests, just like the inflammation measured by the CRP test was unknown before that. Hopefully, there are researchers actively looking into this issue. Best, Richard (Team Member)
