New to UC - How to manage anxiety of symptoms

Hello all,

My symptoms have gotten worse over the past two months: bloody diarrhea 5-15 times a day, pain in the lower abdominal area.

I’m on Prednisone now along with Mesalamine pills + enema and hoping it starts to reduce the amount of times I have go to the bathroom.

Still eating and drinking lots of water/Gatorade.

Is this common for others while in a flare?

  1. I would say that it's quite common for most of us, but for me during a flare, it's exactly the same. How much prednisone on you on?
Personally, I found Gatorade not good from a symptom point of view. It would go right through me and make running to the bathroom a lot worse. I take Hydralyte for hydration and there are other hydration options if that's your issue but I also drink around 3-4 liters of water every day.
Do you have blood every time? It could be there is an ulcer on top of a blood vessel making it bleed. What does your doctor say about all the blood?
Let us know how you get on.

    1. I’m on Day 3 of 40mg of Prednisone. Day 1 and 2 were bad. Day 3, is much better…morning was bad, but it’s been 6 hours since I’ve gone…drinking a bit of pedialite…eating gramham crackers, White Castle burger with the meat and bun only…Chinese rice….it’s like night and day since taking the dose this morning.

I was doing a lot more water the past few weeks. I lessened that today since I feel hydrated. 99% of the time there has been blood. I’ll keep updated on how my symptoms progress over the next few days. The doc said most my symptoms should be gone by day 8-10.

He also said Lialyda might not be strong enough for me and a new alternative for that was released a few months ago.

      They up’ed my Lialyda from 2.4 or 4.8mgs a day…4 pills…

They also told me to stop the enema at night as it would most likely make me need to go more.

    2. Sounds like things are heading in the right direction for you and hopefully better even still after the 8-10 days. Stopping the nighttime enema is a good idea.
