Normal colonoscopy

After raised Calprotectin levels (1700 during a flare up and 495 not during a flare up) I've had a colonoscopy. I thought this was to determine if it was Crohns or IC. However, the doctor has told me he couldn't see any inflammation. They've taken biopsies so I'll wait for the results but I'm very confused. Having such high Calprotectin levels, what else could this mean if there's no inflation? Anyone else had this experience?

  1. I do not have experience with your situation. Like you, I've always thought that high Calprotectin levels indicated inflammation in the intestines. But I'm no physician. How does your Dr. explain the high levels? Did he/she prescribe any medication for this? If I had those Calprotectin levels, I would go get another opinion. I'm never satisfied with one physician's assessment--especially when high numbers are involved. (But my region in the US doesn't have the best medical care.) I say it's always better to err on the side of safety and consult with someone else.

Hopefully, someone with experience in Calprotectin levels chimes in here. Please stay in touch and let us know how everything turns out for you. I'm sending you positive vibes and hope you find some answers. Hugs! --Traci, UC-IBD Team Member

    1. i am surprised to hear that your doctor did not take any action even though you have high level of calprotectin. If there is no inflammation, this could be due to some bacteria infection in your gut. So some treatment is definitely needed.
