Symptoms..

Was also wondering which one comes in spasms or can both crohns and colitis do that?

Today I kept getting spasms of instant pain in my right side of my tummy. To the point where I can't walk and nearly brings a tear to my eye. No build up just instant stabbing sharp pain. Lasts for about 10 - 15 mins then fades off.

Is this normal for someone with an IBD?

Sorry for all the questions.

  1. no need to apologize for the questions! We are happy to help answer them, if we can. I am so sorry to hear you are going through so much pain. Spasms and sharp stomach pains can be symptoms of both crohns and colitis. As Christine and Julie both mentioned in their comments from your last post, following up with testing and a GI doctor would be a great idea! Sending thoughts your way and wishing you the relief you deserve. Warmly, Erin (

    1. Hi . On top of the excellent information from Erin, I just want to share with you this article from the Cleveland Clinic on colon spasms: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/23299-colon-spasms. It notes "Chronic diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease cause chronic inflammation in your bowels, which can lead to colon spasms." Best, Richard (Team Member)

          1. Hi . Our patient leader Vern in this article mentions using heating pads on his abdomen to help with pain: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/colitis-crohns-pain-relief. Thought you and others might be interested in some of his other suggestions. Best, Richard (Team Member)
