Treatment

Hi I have had UC now for 21years and the only thing that helped me was mercaptopurine I was on it for 9yr then had a 5yr break only to be put back on it a year ago over the years I have read a lot of information and books about UC I have recently read about nicotine patches and wondered if anyone had tried this

  1. Hi , thanks for reaching out. I personally haven't heard of anyone in the community using nicotine patches as a treatment option for ulcerative colitis. I know we have community members who have resorted to other complimentary treatments though. I'm providing some information here: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/treatment/complementary-and-alternative-therapies Reach out anytime! - Pam (team member)

    1. I've been an active member of the IBD community for seven years and I only remember hearing of this twice. I am not sure whether they thought it actually helped or not though!

      1. Hi I recently read a book called a journey to health and it claimed that I high percentage of people who have UC are ex smokers to cut a long story short the man in the book started to smoke again and he's not had anymore flare ups and said he knows people who have had the same success with nicotine patches

        1. this is so interesting, I have also never heard this! Thank you for sharing! Just a reminder to be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new treatments. Warmly, Erin (team member)

        2. I was a smoker pre-UC and remained a smoker for about 11 years. I had to have seven surgeries in that time. That's all the experience I have lol.
