Holiday Gifts For Loved Ones With IBD

During the holiday season, advertisements bombard everyone through TV, social media, emails, radio, gigantic billboards, etc. No matter where our eyes land, there is surveillance capitalism, trying ever-so-hard to entice us to spend money. So, what’s a person to do when it comes to buying a holiday gift for someone living with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis?

Do we, and more selfishly, do I, need another scarf or mug that will eventually get lost in the landfill of a closet or kitchen cabinet? Unequivocally, no!

For this holiday, I thought I would highlight some thoughtful gift ideas for someone living with IBD. My goal is to provide a guideline for our friends and loved ones as they shop during this holiday season.

IBD holiday gift ideas

As we know, those of us living with chronic illnesses face unique challenges in managing symptoms, maintaining comfort, and reducing our stress. Well-selected presents not only show a person’s understanding and support, but these gifts also bring moments of joy, relaxation, and practicality to daily life.

As someone who has lived with UC for almost 4 decades, I sat down and made a list of some gift suggestions that balance comfort, and practicality, along with fun and positivity. Let me first begin with ideas that offer comfort.

Comfort-focused gifts for IBD

Heated blanket or heating pad

Can soothe abdominal pain and provide cozy comfort. Better yet, this year I want a fully microwavable stuffed animal that is scented with French lavender. “Warmies” or thermal aids are plush animals stuffed with natural grains that trap the heat and include French lavender scent for relaxation. These adorable “warmies” are designed to retain heat for hours and are weighted to help with stress relief. But don’t be misled. These microwavable stuffed animals aren’t just for children; people of all ages can benefit from the soothing comfort of a “warmie.”

Loungewear or pajamas

These are often made in a soft, breathable material that helps when relaxing on flare-up days. Again, keep the personality of your loved one in mind when shopping for the type of material and design on the loungewear. Think of the person’s hobbies and interests. Personalized pajamas are a creative, unique, and thoughtful gift choice.

Weighted blankets

For those of us with anxiety or insomnia, which often accompany chronic conditions. Before buying, keep these factors in mind: Choose a blanket that’s at least 10 percent of the person’s bodyweight. (Most blankets marketed towards adults are 10, 15, 20, or 25 pounds.) Can the blanket be washed? Or does it have a removable cover? Weighted blankets are a bit challenging to wash because they are heavy. Also, remember that cotton is cooler than polyester or rayon materials, at least in my experience. Size also matters. Weighted blankets aren’t intended to hang over the sides of the bed. So, if too large, the blanket will slide off the bed at night. Therefore, choose a size down from your bed size.

Luxury bath products

Luxury bath products such as bath salts, oils, or various scented bubble baths provide opportunities for stress relief. Remember to keep sensitive skin in mind when buying.

Practical gifts for IBD

Travel kit

Essentials for traveling with IBD, like flushable wipes, hand sanitizer, over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medicine, a portable bidet, and odor eliminator spray. On a personal note, I am always embarrassed by any of my lingering odors. So, I carry a purse size odor eliminator spray with me wherever I go. I was given this once in the hospital and have carried it with me since then.

Medical ID

Jewelry such as a bracelet, necklace, or watch can also contain lifesaving information that include medical conditions, allergies, medications, emergency contact numbers, etc. Wearing a medical ID can help a loved one avoid getting misdiagnosed or prevent harmful medical errors during times of emergencies. Some companies may also offer free medical IDs based on income and/or with a note from a physician.

Meal delivery subscription

These sometimes have options that offer low-residue or gut-friendly food selections. Be sure to check if delivery services are available in certain regions. (Personally, I live in a rural community where this gift would not be applicable.)

Supportive gifts for IBD

Journal or daily planner

Journals and planners can help people with IBD track symptoms, medications, appointments, daily eating choices, etc. This idea makes for a wonderfully inexpensive but thoughtful gift. Plus, many journals or planners can be found in discount dollar stores.

IBD books or cookbooks

To help individuals focus on gut health, IBD-friendly recipe ideas, and more. Searching online or asking friends and family if they have come across any helpful examples is a great place to start. You can offer a loved one great ideas and inspiring stories for a reasonable price.

Online app subscription

Apps can give someone the gift of yoga, meditation, or other stress-reducing activities. Most app subscriptions can be paid monthly or on a cheaper annual plan. This is a growing option, with many great ones to choose from. Personalize the one you choose to your loved one's interests, hobbies, etc.

Fun & inspirational gifts for IBD

Getting creative

Puzzles, adult coloring books, or craft kits can offer a calming distraction during the tough flare-up days.

Positivity

Positive affirmation cards can offer a daily dose of cheer and encouragement, something that can be invaluable when living with IBD.

Gift of fun

Entertainment gift cards to streaming services or audiobook subscriptions can bring laughter, fun, and enjoyment to those challenging, painful days.

Care package

Crohn’s or UC specific care packages are fun to assemble for the one you care about and love. Fill an attractive basket with snacks like bone broth and herbal teas, fuzzy, comfy socks, joke books, therapeutic candles, lotions, stress ball, massage gun, heating pad, soothing scented face scrub, etc. Get creative and enjoy filling a small crate, box, or basket with small items that will make your loved one smile and show that you’re thinking of him or her.

Meeting your loved one's IBD needs

In the end, instead of buying the worn-out cliché’ of a gift for someone living with Crohn’s or colitis, you should consider what specifically would help a person going through IBD flare-ups. By choosing an item(s) that meets the hurting individual’s needs and uplifts their spirit, you can help make this holiday season more meaningful and restorative. So, send this article to someone in your life who needs some gift ideas. And if anyone runs into my husband, please remind him that his wife would love to have a puppy “warmie.”

Happy Holidays to you all!
