Calprotectin

Hi all
Can Calprotectin levels return to normal during a period of no symptons?
After 4 years of 2 or 3 episodes of awful pain, constipation, urgency to go for a poo, mucus in poo and ridiculously increased bladder activity, I finally had my Calprotectin levels tested. The results were 1790 at the end of a 2 week flare up and then 470 two weeks later. Colonoscopy showed no inflammation and biopsies came back clear, hence why I still have no diagnosis of IBD.
I asked for my Calprotectin levels to be tested again (now 5 months since my last flare up) and the result was 26.
If I did have IBD would these levels remain relatively high all the time or can they return to normal when in remission?

  1. Hi It's been my experience that yes you can have low calprotectin and still have IBD.
I have had generally low levels for 30+ years and I have Crohn's. It may mean you have Crohn's instead of ulcerative colitis. It depends on where in your bowel the inflammation is occurring. If it's in the small, then it may be low but in the large, it may be higher.
I would check with your doctor to confirm and get clarification though.
Let us know how you get on.
