Colitis

Hi all
New here first time .my daughter as not long been diagnosed with colitis she is having a flair up been about 3 weeks with blood in her stoles been se just said flair up as anyone else had the same experience?????? I know everyone is different

  1. Hello , I'm so glad that you've reached out here. My heart goes out to you and your daughter that she is dealing with, not only a fairly new diagnosis of colitis, but also a current flare up for the past three weeks. You are correct that everyone is different, however, you daughter is not alone in having the experience of a flare up causing blood in the stool. I'm sharing a link to an article that one of our advocates put together about what a flare up looks like for her, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/uc-flare-up.

Also, if you haven't already, please don't hesitate to reach out to her doctor, especially with any new or worsening symptoms. Sometimes it can be helpful (and reassuring) to check in with the doctor in charge of care and treatment.

Watching our children deal with difficult health challenges can really be heartbreaking, and I just wanted to let you know that we are here for you! Hopefully some of our community members here can also chime in and share their experiences with you as well. And, please don't hesitate to reach out here anytime. This community is here for you both! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Hi . Just to follow up on the excellent information from Christine, I want to share with you this article from our editorial team on IBD in children and teens: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/what-is-crohns-disease/children-and-teens.
Also, we want you to know that you are not alone. Our health leader Natalie wrote this article for the parent of a child diagnosed with IBD: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/parent-whose-child-diagnosed. Also, I can tell you that blood in the stool is a fairly common flare symptom (see here for example: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/early-signs-crohns), but as Christine noted, it is important to relay this information to the doctor. Hope this information is helpful and know that this community is here for you. Best, Richard (Team Member)
