10 year old with Ulcerative Colitis

My son has just been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and we are so overwhelmed. Does anyone have any suggestions for us? Diet, recipes, knowledge about taking Humira? He is in a severe flare up right now but are looking for overall help.

Thank you in advance!!

  1. Hi . I'm sure it is difficult to see your child struggle with this condition. It is good that he has you to advocate on his behalf and that you are seeking out places you can get information and support. You are not alone in this community. Our contributor Natalie wrote this article for the parent of a child with IBD (she was writing about Crohn's, but just as applicable to UC): https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/parent-whose-child-diagnosed.

Concerning diet, it is important to note that what impacts or works for one may not for another. I know a lot of community members use a food diary to figure out what works for them. In this article our contributor Jenna wrote about what she believes to be the pros and cons: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/food-diary. In addition, Jennifer wrote here about how a gluten-free diet helped her son: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/diet-for-child-with-crohns.

It is certainly understandable that you have questions about Humira, particularly in relation to use by a child. I can't personally speak on this issue, but I want to share with you this article on the study of the efficacy and safety of Humira in pediatric UC patients: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/langas/article/PIIS2468-1253(21)00142-4/abstract. I also want to note that treatments have advanced quite a bit in recent years and that a full and happy life is absolutely possible for your son. Please feel free to keep us posted on how things are going and to ask additional questions - this community is here for you and your family. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    1. Hi , I just wanted to check in and see how you and your son are doing. I know it's only been about a week, and I wasn't sure if you had a chance to read through some of the information Richard shared with you, but please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. This community is here for you! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
