Eating During the Holidays

Hi everyone,

As winter rolls around, holidays across many cultures are coming up--many of them having to do with food. What do you do to help yourself still enjoy holidays while also managing your IBD?

For me, it's smaller portions and right now staying away from a lot of veggies with skins. I might suggest we roast up some carrots during one of our holidays this winter, since I am able to tolerate soft carrots well.

Looking forward to hearing from you <3

  1. like you, I have to limit fibre - particularly insoluble fibre! It's difficult because I love veg so much, but I also love being able to get out and do things, and if I mess up with my food intake, that will result in me getting stuck indoors, so needs must!

    1. Making sure I have all of my medications with me and taken properly is very important. I had a short flare last week. Fortunately, it only lasted one day. I had colon cancer 7 years ago but I still have 2/3 of my colon. But that is enough to mess up things! I am going to my daughter's home for Christmas. She is well aware of my food allergy, and other foods I am intolerant to. But still, it is not "home." So I will make sure I have my anti-diarrhea medication. She is an excellent cook who love to experiment with new foods. So I still have to be careful. If you are not sure about a food -- don't eat it. It is better than having a bad reaction and suffering.

      1. Hi . I like your statement that "If you are not sure about a food -- don't eat it." I have seen you discuss your food allergy here and elsewhere and understand the need to be careful (I have a couple of food allergies, one that could potentially be deadly). When you toss in foods that could be an IBD trigger and being your own advocate is essential. People mostly write about self advocacy from a medical standpoint (see here for example: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/own-advocate), but, as important as that is, it really needs to permeate all aspects of life with a chronic condition like IBD.
