Diet tips during a flare up

Hi! I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis for many years now. I have had my symptoms under control for a long time with the help of Entyvio. I missed a couple of infusions and now my colitis is out of control. I have been researching diet tips during flare ups. However, I’m finding that a lot of people are eating oats and strawberries?? And in general, things I could never eat as a UC patient. I fully understand that everybody is different and can tolerate different things with their UC. I guess I’m just frustrated because I know these things are 100% off limits for me. Anybody else who cannot touch these things and have found food that works for them during a flare that doesn’t involve oats or seeds but still provides nutrients? Every video I watch and everything I read from people with UC flares, includes foods that have always made me sick/have been told to stay away from. Advice? Tips?

  1. Hi , thanks for reaching out. I can hear your frustration on not being able to eat certain foods that other are able to (and are even able to eat during flare ups). You're right that everyone is different, but that also means that surely there are other people here who cannot tolerate oats and strawberries as well. I hope any of those community members see your post here and chime in.

In the meantime, I wanted to share this article from our advocate, Vern, about his "flare friendly" foods (which does NOT include oats or strawberries), https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/crohns-flare-friendly-foods As well as this article from another advocate about the foods he turns to during a flare, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/uc-flare-foods.

In addition to these articles, I also wanted to share our advocate, Christal's, article about her flare action plan, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/flare-action-plan. (It is not only about eating/food, but I thought you might still be interested in it.)

I do hope this community can help you feel reassured that you aren't alone. And please don't hesitate to reach out here anytime, whether you have questions, need to vent, or could use some advice.

Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. I have found that Tuna fish (really good tuna fish in water) helps my gut a lot when I am hvg a flare up.
