Feeling apprehensive

Hi all, i am new to this sight and i was just wondering if having inflammation of the bowel means it is definitely IBD?. I have suffered for many years with IBS or so they said it was, it started in my 20’s and i am now 57 recently i was asked to send a stool sample off and it came back showing inflammation of the bowel. Yesterday i had a Colonoscopy and i was told it all looked ok but they did take about 5 biopsy’s to send off and now i have got to wait for 6 weeks for the results, but now i am wondering if having inflammation of the bowel could be due to anything else other than IBD.

  1. Hello there . We appreciate you taking the time to become a registered member of our site and reaching out with your question. We're glad that you recently got some tests done to see what's going on, and we hope that you can get some helpful answers in return. Just to clarify, you've been diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and not IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)? Inflammation of the bowel can be caused by a variety of different conditions, and sometimes it can be challenging to determine which is causing it. Best, Ashley (Team Member)

    1. Hi Ashley, thank you for your reply. Yes many years ago i was told i had IBS but over the last couple of years it has got so bad that i stopped going out for meals with my partner and our best friends as every time i go out for a meal i have to go to the toilet during the meal and after the meal and then we have hat to wait for a while before leaving the restaurant as i know i will have to use the bathroom again. I have had a few very embarrassing accidents and now i have got to the stage that i would rather stay at home on my days off from work. My best friend who i call my sister and her partner both suffer with IBS and they kept telling me that i should get another opinion as my problem seemed a lot worse than IBS. I went to see my Dr and they sent to the specialist at the hospital a letter telling them how things were. But then lockdown came so i was waiting for quite some time, then i had a phone call from my Dr asking me to pick a sample pot up to send a stool sample in which i did. A week or so later i had a text from the Dr's surgery saying the Dr had looked over my results and that i needed to book a phone consultation, so i did that and the Dr phoned me the next day and said the results were showing bowel inflammation and it was quite high and he was going to send a letter to the consultant who had asked for the sample and he thought that they would want to see me sooner rather than later. So like i said i went on Monday 28th for my Colonoscopy and now just got to wait for 6 weeks for the results of the biopsy's that they did. I have 3 children all grown up and they all suffer the same problem, and my youngest daughter told me that quite some time ago she was asked to send a stool sample in and her test came back showing bowel inflammation but they have never followed it up.

    2. Sorry to hear your children have the same issue. It's not good that nothing was ever followed up with your daughter!
Hope you get answers ASAP. I would also advise your daughter to question why nothing was ever done for her!

  2. Hi .

Yes, it is possible for inflammation to be found and it not be Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative colitis. Multiple things can cause inflammation, for example, NSAIDs, microscopic colitis, and infection. Hopefully the biopsies will give a better idea of what's going on! 😀

Let us know how it goes.
