Had a bowel resection 3 years ago? Now bowel twisting and pain in resection join?

Hey- can I please get some advise
A few days ago I was bending over cleaning well scrubbing the sofa and I felt my intestine turn over/ twist pain was so intense took my breath away and thought I would pass out I got myself straight up and it flipped back and I was fine. Has anyone experienced this? I have since also had pain in the join where I had a bowel resection the anastomosis??

  1. Oh my goodness, , that sounds like a very painful and scary experience! I have not heard of this before, so I'm curious about other community members here chiming in with any similar experiences they've had. Also, if you haven't already, I would reach out to your doctor (about both this particular twisting pain, as well as the pain where your bowel resection occurred). Anything new, especially when causing so much pain, is worth getting checked out, or at least having a conversation with the doctor to determine if you should be seen about it. In the meantime, hopefully some others here can share with you. I do hope you can get some answers! Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. I had to be admitted to the hospital once about 16 years ago because of excess bloating and vomiting. The specialist thought I had a twisted bowel. They put a tube up my nose to empty my stomach. Because it wasn't twisted at all. But very painful anyway.i didn't remember witch side of my nose had been fractured so they were trying to put this tube in my left side and were down to the smallest tube. Till I finally realized that the left side of my nose was fratured when I had a very big epileptic seizure. So they finally were able to put a tube up my right side. So very uncomfortable for a week plus I couldn't have anything through my mouth and when they finally took the tube out and took my serums out I begged the nurse for a toast with jam. Oh my I'd never eaten something so delicious. Anyway thats some of my signal's that my Chrons was acting up.

    2. oh wow! That sounds like a terrible experience. I am so sorry to hear that you had to go through all of this. I can only imagine how uncomfortable it all was, and how delicious the toast with jam tasted after a week plus of nothing to eat. Thank you so much for sharing with us here. How are you managing currently? -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. Sorry you are experiencing all this pain. I have had multiple bowel resections over the years and I have never experienced that kind of pain you are describing that far out of a resection. Three years is a long time for pain to suddenly happen. I agree with you should reach out to your doctor sooner than later. It is true, the disease, pain etc usually comes back at the point of the previous resection. The twisting sensation is interesting to me and I would be curious to know what that is as well. Every time I have had resections, it is always at the point of the previous and 99% of the time (for me) it is also a point of narrowing which may be why you have the pain.
I would contact your GP or GI (GP might be quicker) and get it checked out. It may be nothing.
Let us know how you get on.

    1. Hi . Have you been diagnosed with adhesions following your surgery? I ask because in this article our contributor Matt notes that "some adhesions can twist or kink a bowel. This can lead to blockages. Or severe abdominal pain:" https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/intestinal-resections-positives-negatives. That said, I want to express my agreement with the others concerning discussing this issue with your doctor. Hoping you can get some answers and avoid this pain happening again. 1. Hi- thank you for taking the time to respond as well as everyone else 😀 that was a really interesting article! And makes me wonder if that is my issue. The pain has settled and I haven’t had anymore twisting episodes thankfully. I did speak with my consultant she has arranged an mri next week for them to take a look but as we know adhesions wouldn’t show. Her explanation was that currently I am in the middle of a flare that can cause that’s part of your bowel to harden and she said it wasn’t uncommon that after a resection the bowel moves around more with the extra space in there 😂!! Thank you again for sharing this with me. I will post and update when I have one!
