Help and advice needed please

Hi. I am a 42 year old male.

I’ve been having stomach pains (mainly below the left rib. And I’d say it’s been virtually constant for at least a year.

Symptoms:

I’ve been having belts of diarrhoea, in all consistencies. The desperation that goes with it can be embarrassing. Sometime not long after eating.

Stomach rumbles so loud and is uncomfortable to the point it wakes me up sometimes.

I’ve previously had red blood in my stools.

I’ve constantly got faeces leakage/discharge

I have fatigue which increases with alcohol consumption.

Previous medical conditions include:

a sliding hiatus hernia/acid indigestion.

Mild Anxiety/ depression.

Tests:

I’ve been to the doctors about my stomach problems. I was first told it was IBS, however after the blood in my stool I was referred for a colonoscopy.

By the time the surgery came the bleeding had stopped. They only looked at the first part of my colon. They said it was normal and did not take any samples.

I was referred to a specialist and he arranged a Faecal calprotectin test. About a month later the results come back and it said I had low raises levels and to do another test.

The results have gone back to my GP, and I got a message to arrange a telephone appointment to discuss them. This is for a weeks time.

I am guessing the rascal calprotectin is raised again otherwise he wouldn’t have needed to speak to me.

I may be jumping the gun, but I blame my anxiety.

Does anyone recognise these symptoms as early IBD, or know why else the results are raised or why the doctor isnt phoning me any earlier?

Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi @Rawl11.

I can definitely say that the symptoms you describe are experienced by many people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. If it were me, I would request another colonoscopy with biopsies (I know this is not a pleasant experience).

When you were diagnosed with IBS, did they prescribe any medications or dietary changes, and did these help?

Hope the appointment goes well - keep us informed!

      1. Hi @sahara

No, I wasn’t really provided any support at all for IBS. I was given mebeverine but that made no difference.

After seeing the specialist, he suggested colpermin, but due to my hiatus hernia I got bad indigestion with it.

I’ll push the doctor for more tests. I just don’t understand why I wouldn’t be told the test results immediately. Surely IBD is a priority?

        Thanks

    2. I had similar symptoms before I was diagnosed with Crohn's. Of course I am not a doctor, but just from personal experience, I would suggest asking for a pill cam test. You may have inflammation in the upper parts of your intestines which a colonoscopy wouldn't show.

Also, I too would ask for another colonoscopy with biopsies. Such a pain that they didn't do it the first time. But biopsies can show so much.

In the meantime, have you tried diet change? I would suggest cutting out grains, dairy and processed sugars to see if your symptoms improve. Diet helped me a lot.

      Keep us posted!

      1. Hi Elizabeth

        Thanks for your reply.

The women who performed the colonoscopy said that if systems continue they would consider the other part of the colon. But Because I had bleeding they concentrated on the lower part only.

I was surprised they took no biopsies, and it surprised me that they didn’t just look at the whole colon, rather than put me through that experience again.

I have considered diet change. But I had no idea where to start and was hoping the doctor or specialist would have helped point me in the right direction.

I have googled a lot to see the difference between IBS and IBD but I don’t see any major differences as symptoms seem to be so similar, but more extreme for IBD.

One thing to add is I had a faecal cal protectin test back in September/October time and it was negative, but then November/December it was low raised levels, and now this one which I’ve not been told yet, but he does want to discuss them.

I’ll keep you posted. Monday is not that far away now.

      2. Okay, definitely keep us posted. At least you are working with a doctor and doing the necessary steps to start to get answers. Keep pushing for tests until you get answers.
