Is migraine associated with IBD

I’ve recently been diagnosed with Acute colitis following a bout of e-Coli. I’ve suffered with IBS for 30 years and migraine for over 20, so I’m wondering if the colitis had always been there just undiagnosed. What I’d like to know is, does anyone know if migraine and colitis are linked? I ask as since taking prednisolone I’ve had fewer migraines?

  1. Hi I have never had migraines in my 34 years of Crohn's but I do know from my GI that there is a link between migraines and gastrointestinal problems. She asked me each time I had an appointment about headaches or migraines, so I asked her and that is what I was told. I am not sure why, but according to my GI, there is a link.
Fix or control the gastrointestinal problems, the migraines should decrease (in theory).

    1. I GET THE WORST MIGRAINES NOW! SOOO BAD

  2. just to clarify, when you say colitis, do you mean ulcerative colitis (UC) or just colitis? I ask because ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease. Colitis simply means inflammation of the intestine, which can be caused by many things such as food poisoning...
Anyway, in answer to your question, migraines are definitely not a common symptom of UC. However, I imagine there are a few factors that could contribute to migraines, such as dehydration, which can be a problem for people with UC. However, dehydration risk usually increases due to things such as diarrhea, so if that's not a constant thing then that's likely not it.
As for having been there all along just not diagnosed, IBD is thought to be linked to genes, so many people are predisposed to having IBD, which is "triggered" at some point by something external. Some people have their first flare during pregnancy for example, or it could be as simple as something in the environment.
    Hope that helps!

    1. Hi Sahara, thanks for your reply, it really helps to learn more about the condition. All I know at this stage is it’s acute colitis so not sure if it’s UC, I know ulcers were present when they took the colonoscopy. I’ll know more in the coming months after further tests so will stay on line to share and discuss symptoms etc

      1. How are things going?
