Mild chronic colitis

My biopsy says it’s a mild chronic colitis. I have been on pentasa for two months and all was going well. This morning I again saw blood on wipe and I got too frustrated. Not sure if it’s injury from enema or inflammation. Has anyone experienced the same thing - what was the outcome.

  1. Hello, , thanks for reaching out. I can hear and understand your frustration in seeing blood after two months of treatment going well. Unfortunately, you're not alone in an experience like this, so I do hope our community members with personal experience can share with you here. While I certainly can't speak for certain, it's possible that it is not due to inflammation from the colitis but instead the enema you mention. There are also other things that can cause some blood when wiping and I will link an article here that goes into more detail about rectal bleeding as well as types and causes, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/symptoms/rectal-bleeding. Definitely don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor (if you haven't already), especially if the bleeding continues or if you're concerned. Please know that our community is here for you, and let us know if you have other questions or could use some support. We are here for you! Wishing you a gentle day. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Thank you for your reply and taking time out to reply- really appreciate it.
I hope it’s not from inflammation and is from enema use as I have been using them for a while and sometimes I administer them a bit quickly causing a bit of a pressure against my rectum. May be it’s due to that. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

    2. I will cross my fingers for you as well! Please, if you're comfortable, keep us posted. And, as Elizabeth said, don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor about all this. Sometimes there can be some trial and error to find a treatment that helps. I'm not saying this is true for your situation, but, sometimes treatments that were effective become less so and a new medication can be tried. All that being said, I'm crossing my fingers it was just the enema and you continue to feel relief and heal. Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

  2. I understand your frustration completely. If you haven't already, I would reach out to your doctor about the bleeding. Having symptoms be under control in the beginning of starting a medication to then find your symptoms return shortly is something that has happened to me often. From my personal experience, I would offer the tip of letting your doctor know. And if things continue to worsen, advocate for yourself and ask to try another medication. Sometimes we tend to wait months to say we want a medication change, and we don't have to suffer unnecessarily for so long. I hope you feel better today, Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Thank you so much for your reply.
I feel a bit lost and depressed.
My condition started in august when I came back from holiday and there I had a bout of diarrhoea.
In November I was offered colonoscopy where all of my colon was fine except the rectum where they found inflammation and no ulcers were found.
Even my doctor didn’t specify it. He wrote mild chronic colitis. I don’t have any urgency or pain and I just go only once as usual but before I started medicine I had 2-3 movements where only blood and mucus will come out. Now since I assume it’s a flare I don’t have any other symptoms other than blood and mucus with my bowl movement.
Called IBD nurse this morning and she upped my dose .
I hope it gets sorted soon.
      Thank you for your support

      1. Hi . Your feelings are understand and I'm glad to hear you were able to speak with someone and get your treatment adjusted so quickly. I know it probably doesn't help much in the here and now, but it is not rare for treatments to have to be adjusted in the early period after a diagnosis. Hoping you see some improvement soon and please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing and to ask further questions. Best, Richard (Team Member)

      2. You are so welcome. Always here to offer support.

And I know how you feel. I've been there too in feeling lost and depressed. We are all human and it's a hard journey you are going through. Having days where you feel lost and depressed are normal. I went through it a lot myself.

But don't lose hope. It get's better, you will find relief at some point. Things will turn around. Hopefully this new change in dosage will offer you relief. If not, try another medication until you do. Thankfully, we live in a time where our options for medication is vast.

Here is an article that might help during this time: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/crohns-depression

        Sending hugs your way,

    2. Did you know that Pentasa also comes in pill form? Since I'm not a fan of daily enemas, I opted for the pill form when I took Pentasa. Have you considered asking your doctor about prescribing it that way? Just thought I would mention this since I once took the same medication. I hope the suggestion helps.
