New Here--Work-Related Question

My question is: when you do feel you can go back to work in a flare?

I have just started on Entocort and was off work last week. My bowel symptoms are slowly improving, but I just feel so achy and tired, and my joints hurt. Ideally, I would like to take one more week off work.

Years ago I didn't take time off for flare and ended up hospitalized and taking three months off. I promised myself if I ever flared again I would take care of myself better. But I just feel bad not going to work unless I'm in terrible shape.

I do have a lot of sick days accrued and plan to retire next year.

Advice? Input?

  1. Hi . It is good that you are looking to take care of yourself and make sure you are ready to return to work. I don't know what type of job you have, but I want to share with you this article on workplace rights and accommodations: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/resources-work.
It is good that your symptoms are improving. As noted in this article on the topic, corticosteroids, of which Entocort (budesonide) is a type, start to work very quickly: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/treatment/medications/corticosteroids. However, it is also noted that they are not considered long-term and do not heal the damage in the lining of the intestines.
It is understandable that on one level you want to be able to return to work and it seems like this work ethic should have earned you some good standing with your employers. You know your body and it is important to listen to what it is telling you.
Hopefully others will chime in with their experience on returning to work when dealing with a flare. Wishing you the best and please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing. Richard (Team Member)
