Normal biopsy results

Hi. My 11 year old son has had ongoing symptoms for around a year now, but nothing was ever found until he went in for an emergency appendectomy in April 22’ whilst in surgery they discovered some issues to the joint between his large bowel and appendix. He was referred for 2 specialist ultrasound during a weeks stay in hospital august 22’ which showed he had thickening and was told potentially Crohn’s disease. He has had ongoing abdominal pain, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, loss of appetite and weight, mouth ulcers and skin issues. He had a colonoscopy and endoscopy 4 weeks ago and they took numerous biopsies. We have attended the IBD clinic today to get his results and they have all come back normal although they found inflammation and red patches in his descending colon. I feel we should be happy with these results but moving forward I’m unsure where to go now, his calprotectin levels are still raised and bloods showing inflammation but have no been passed onto gastroenterology team and will be seen in 4 months time, which doesn’t help his ongoing constant pain. Anyone with similar experience or any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

  1. I am so sorry you and your son are going through this, @Hlh1992.

It is quite frustrating when symptoms still occur despite the test results being "normal". Do you have the ability to see another specialist to get a second opinion who can also see your son sooner than 4 months from now?

I hope you and your son get the answers you deserve soon! Please keep us posted.

    1. Thankyou. We do hope so, we are currently awaiting test results for numerous other conditions, including lyme’s disease and parasites… none of which really match his symptoms. They are trying to tick as many things off the list and cover all bases but just feel deflated after thinking today would be diagnosis day.

      1. So sorry you are going through this. I second what Julie suggested about trying to see another specialist. 4 months is too long, a lot can happen within that time. In the meantime, I would try to support his gut the best you can. Diet is key in helping with symptoms. Try to eat as organic as possible, cooked veggies always, bone broth, chicken broth, fermented foods, try to stay away from processed foods completely. Is he taking any supplements? For me personally, I take a probiotic, L-Glutamine, beef liver, beef intestines, beef colostrum, vitamin d and cbd oil. I feel great!

Also, again, I am not a medical doctor, just sharing my personal experience. When I have pain, it turned out it was due to overgrowth in my gut. I stopped eating wheat and processed sugar completely. In about a month, I felt brand new. No pain. I starved out the overgrowth and I started to heal. Everyone is so different though. The pain for your son could be another reason but I thought I would share.

I hope he gets relief soon.
