Pain in back passage

HI, Ive had UC for 10 years, barely any flares been stable on Pentasa 4g per day. Im 60 years old.
The last few weeks I have had awful pain in my rectum as well as pain in tummy area and generally feeling unwell.
I kept returning to Gp and given more hemorrhoids creams, it never went and I didnt think it was this anyway.
I have been put forward for a colonoscopy but goodness knows how long this is gonna take. Im in the Uk and things are just taking forever these days.
Im just wondering is this something that others have experienced ? or is it likely its something completely different to UC. Its the pain in my rear end thats the worst
Im so fed up now not getting anywhere with GP or referral, I am thinking of going to A&e now

  1. Perhaps it could be a fistula? Those can be so painful. Are you able to phone your doctor and say you are concerned it is a fistula? Perhaps that could help get you seen sooner? Here is an article that talks about fistulas that might help give you more info to see if this applies to you:

I hope you feel better today. Best, Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Oh dear, , I'm so sorry to hear that you've been experiencing pain recently. It's great that you're in communication with your doctor and you're getting set up for a colonoscopy. Is the colonoscopy due to your most recent symptoms? If not, please don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor (if you haven't already) to discuss your most recent symptoms. There can be a lot of various reasons for tummy pain, general malaise, and pain in the rectum. As Elizabeth pointed out, it could be a fistula, or abscess, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/symptoms/complications/abscess, but, of course, only your doctor can find the cause of your pain. In the meantime, I hope some of our community members with similar experiences can share with you here! If you're comfortable, please keep us updated with how you're doing. This community is here for you! Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

      1. Thankyou for your reply. I took myself to A&E, after a 6 hour wait I saw a doctor who inserted a gloved finger into my rectum and said there was an obstruction/ mass. She has asked for an urgent colonoscopy to be done, so Im waiting for that phone call, but our health service is so busy here in the UK, I have no idea how long this will be. I am still in extreme pain it goes on for about 6/7 hours, mornings seem to be worse, possible because Ive had a BM? Im worried sick right now .
I will keep you informed of scope results when it happens.

        1. Oh , what an ordeal! Thank you so much for coming back to update us. I'm so glad that you took care of yourself and went to A&E. But, yes, I can hear how worrying it was that they found an obstruction/mass. I'm crossing my fingers that you can get that colonoscopy scheduled soon so that you can get some answers. Were they able to give you anything to help ease the pain while you wait? Being in extreme pain for six to seven hours sounds horrible! In the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out here anytime. We are here for you! Sending you gentle hugs. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

        2. Hi . You mentioned the doctor finding an obstruction, but also that you have been able to have BMs. I'm sharing this article from our patient leader Marisa on dealing with a partial bowel obstruction: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/partial-bowel-obstruction. I'm not saying this is what you are dealing with (and I'm not sure this could be detected with a rectal exam), but I want to provide the information. If possible, it could be helpful to get a fuller description of what the doctor found, especially for when you speak to a different doctor. Hoping you can get some answers and relief soon.
