Polyp found in colon during sigmoidoscopy.

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is doing the best they can!

I am 18 yrs old with a recent diagnosis of left sided UC. I had a colonoscopy in December of 2022 with my results displaying mild to moderate inflammation and NO polyp. When I very recently had a sigmoidoscopy, there was a polyp found and biopsied in my descending colon.

I guess my question is, can my inflammation cause a polyp to develop that fast? Over the course of barely 2 months? This definitely scares me, as I am not on a treatment to help with my current inflammation/ flare. Maybe some of you have/ had similar experiences? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Stay well everyone!

  1. I am not sure how fast a polyp can develop. Definitely ask your doctor about that. I am curious myself. All I can say is, in my personal journey, I had a time where I had a couple of polyps that were biopsied. That had my preoccupied. And then my next colonoscopy I had zero and haven't had any since. I guess I just wanted to share, that it is also to possible to have polyps and for them to go away. -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Sorry to hear about the UC diagnosis. I know that, depending on your gene type and mutations, polyps can grow fast. Maybe they missed it the first time? I would definitely ask your doctor if it is anything for concern.
Let us know how you get on.

      1. I'm sorry to read about your diagnosis! Please let us know how the biopsy turns out. I also don't know how quickly polyps can grow, but I'm also glad your doctor found and removed one. Hopefully, it turns out benign. Again, let us know how you're doing. Until then, we'll keep you in our thoughts.
