This Chinese herb, Qing Dai, has been so helpful to my UC that I am inspired to share my experience with you all.
I am 65 years old and have been struggling with mild to moderate UC for ten years - with no help from the standard Western treatments. And I refuse the gastroenterologists' recommended biologics. I have also tried all kinds of herbal treatments, to no avail.
Four months ago, I stumbled onto research about Qing Dai, aka Indigo Naturalis. I started with 1.5 grams per day. Within a week, my symptoms (extreme urgency, watery stools, 6-8 bowel movements per day) were 75% better. After three weeks, my bowel movements had returned to my baseline before UC began. After four months, I continue to be symptom free! Amazing!
Unfortunately, I have not been able to find Qing Dai-aware Chinese Medicine practitioners or herbalists who can guide me in the treatment (when to decrease or discontinue dosage? how to best monitor for potential negative effects?).
Of course, not everyone's UC will respond in the same way and there are some cautions in the (small sample) data about potential side effects that can be quite concerning. Given the relative paucity of research (there's no big money in this kind of treatment at $1 per day), it is difficult to discern how probable or potentially dangerous the side effects might be.
One might proceed with caution and seek some guidance if possible, but my experience has been life-changing.
