Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome

Hello everyone.

My daughter is 17 and has had some investigations and biopsies. She has been diagnosed with solitary rectal ulcer syndrome at the moment (dr said that could change) and will be having surgery to remove as much of the ulcer as possible and send it off for more testing. During the surgery they'll also investigate more inside.

Does anyone have any experience with this syndrome? The Dr told us it's very rare and he has only seen one case of it before. I can't find much information online and there is nothing at all on the NHS website (we're in the UK)

I'm really hoping we can get some help and advice here, she's suffering so much.

Kind regards

  1. I'm so sorry your daughter is going through this. I have never heard of this syndrome before. Does she also have Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis? I hope her procedure goes well and she gets relief. Is she currently on any medication?

Sending strength your way, Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Thankyou for your reply.
She's only taking pain relief and buscopan at the moment, the Dr hasn't prescribed anything.
No diagnosis of chrones or colitis but I assume that's what the further investigations will be for, when they remove the ulcer they want to send a bigger sample for biopsy.

      Thanks Elizabeth

      1. Perhaps look into CBD oil? That offers pain relief and also lowers inflammation which could be helpful. Ask your doctor. I hope you get more answers from the biopsy so you can have better knowledge for treatment. In the meantime we are here for support! Hugs, Elizabeth (team member)

      2. - Sounds like your daughter is really going through a lot. I hope she's able to find some answers and get some relief soon. When is her surgery scheduled for?

    2. I just wanted to say that I have been diagnosed with Solitary Ulcer Syndrome recently too. No treatment has been offered so far. I am waiting for a follow up appointment.

What are the symptoms in your daughter 's case? In mine, it is inability to go to the toilet properly and stomach cramps.

      1. Hello, her symptoms are passing blood and mucus around 8 times per day (nothing brown or solid like it should be) eating causes stomach pain, she gets a lot of pain in her rib area and hip area too. When she was diagnosed we were told she'd have the ulcer removed within 3 weeks which has been done, it's been sent for further biopsy but apart from that nothing has changed, she's still experiencing exactly the same as before the surgery. I'm wondering if she has another ulcer further inside or even in her tummy, I'm going to ask for an MRI scan.

I hope you get offered some treatment soon and get some relief xx
