What are your "safe foods" that never make you sick?

  • By Julie Marie Palumbo Moderator

When I was flaring, I often felt like there was literally nothing I could eat that wouldn’t make me feel sick. However, the truth was there were at least 5 items that I could always have (chicken broth, eggs, avocado, rice, etc.) that would be gentle on my GI system.

It honestly made me feel better emotionally knowing I could still enjoy some foods that didn’t make me sick, and I knew that if I was ever traveling I could pack some of these items and never be stranded without something to eat (which is HUGE!).

What are some of your go-to “safe foods” that you know when all else fails, you can at least eat these and still feel well?

ooo this is a good one!

For me mine are, bone broth, chicken broth, strawberries, blueberries, grain-free crackers, eggs, ground turkey and dairy-free yogurt.

Those are my friends and they have never let me down. They are consistently nice to my intestines.

    Great question!

I tend to find that simple carbs are usually a good bet for me – plain crackers, plain pasta, plain potato, white bread, white rice. Super boring and not always filling, but usually these things don’t make anything worse for me.

Baked/grillled chicken with a bit of paprika and olive oil. White bread (toasted) with strawberry jam. Baked lays chips plain. Avoiding garlic and onions at all cost, those really put me on the floor.

Plain soft bagels, crackers, chicken and rice soups, 50% water diluted gatorade, and only sips of chocolate milk if I’m feelin it. I have never felt good after eating eggs though, not sure what it is but I just don’t. They are such good protein too which makes me a little sad that I can’t eat them a lot.

So interesting – for me eggs are nearly the only thing I can eat. Here’s the real kicker: I have a sensitivity to eggs – how does that work?!?!

Rice – white or yellow, bananas (thankfully can eat them again), and simple carbs like bread and pasta. I always try to incorporate a protein like an egg or tender chicken.
