Lingering Bloody Diarrhea After IBS Flare Last nNight

Hi everyone,

I'm 55 and have suffered with IBS since my 20s. Last night after going out for dinner with my husband, I had a bad IBS attack. I had diarrhea, stomach gurgling and cramps, felt nauseous and lightheaded. These are all typical IBS symptoms for me. However, now I have a new symptom: lingering bloody diarrhea, which has me scared to death. I never had this before with an IBS attack. I do have hemorrhoids which flare occasionally, but this is different this time. It's too much blood.. I do plan to call my gastro tomorrow and make an appt for a colonoscopy. But in the meantime, I'm just very worried. Could this be Ulcerative Colitis? Has anyone else had this before? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. I feel your pain, @gums2004 and understand how scary this must be for you. I think you did the right thing in scheduling an appointment with your doctor, as IBS/IBD symptoms can present themselves differently in each person and proper imagining and testing is the best way to determine what is going on. I hope you are able to sleep well tonight and can get some clarity tomorrow!

    1. Hi , I'm so sorry that you are having this scary symptom! I know it can be really disconcerting to see blood. I believe this could be many things and I am glad that you are talking to the doctor to think through next steps. I do have ulcerative colitis myself and do see bloody stool myself. If you do end up having something like UC, please feel free to reach out to all of us--we are here for you! I am thinking of you in the meantime and hope that you do update us. -Eshani (Team Member)

      1. Thank you so much!
I will def reach out again after getting a colonoscopy to see what this is. I'm hoping it's nothing serious...and yes, seeing blood like that is definitely scary!

        1. Hi .
How are you getting on? Did you get to see the Gastro and some tests done?
