Crohns flare up but doctors are denying it!

Hi, I have crohns colitis and was diagnosed with this almost 2 years ago. I’ve been having a lot of stomach cramps and bloating recently, and waking up in the night in awful pain which makes me feel very sick. Hot sweats etc. Blood and mucus in stool. I did a stool sample 5 weeks ago (before my symptoms got this bad and before the blood) to check calprotectin and it was slightly raised but apparently nothing to be alarmed about but it’s within the ‘grey area’ so could show something is going on. Anyway, now I have all these symptoms and I feel so sad and stressed about it but my gastro is telling me that because I’m not going toilet more than twice a day I’m probably okay ?? Trying to tell me that the blood is from haemorrhoids when I don’t even get them! And they aren’t going to repeat a stool sample to check again because there’s blood in it and it won’t show an accurate result. I’m just wondering, if anyone else has been through this? Where you KNOW something isn’t right but your being told you’re actually alright. Not sure what to do 🙁 my tummy feels like it’s constantly on fire !

  1. I am so sorry to hear this @aax0987! Being your own advocate is essential when living with IBD, and I have also had experiences with knowing something else was going on than what I was being told. I would just keep pressing until you get confirmation that it is hemorrhoids through an exam, or do another stool sample. If your care team won't honor that, I would suggest seeking a second opinion from a different GI. Then, when no stones are left unturned can you accept your diagnosis and what is going on.
    Please keep us posted!

    1. this is something I have experienced A LOT! I know it's quite common for others too.
For me, CRP (blood test) and Calprotectin were never great indicators of what was going on in my body. I usually needed a scope and biopsies to show what was really going on!
