Anyone ever been diagnosed with a digestive disorder, after a gallbladder removal (cholecystotomy)?

Here's my history:

- 2 pregnancies
- Cholecystotomy (2012)
-10 years of minor digestive issues - bloating, fatique, diarrhea constantly
-Last six months of this year, symptoms intensified: bloating, adominal pains/cramps, constant bathroom trips, foul smelling diarrhea, watery diarrhea.
- Went to GP, sent me for bloodwork and ultrasound three weeks ago, all came back normal, but IGA antibody came back high. Dr didn't feel the need to follow up with me, as all came back normal.
-I had an emergency hospital stay, last week, which er dr suspected partial bowel obstruction.
-CT scan completed, no partial or full obstruction of my instestines, but found a "luminal collapse with mild wall prominence in the most proximal aspect of ascending colon adjacent to the terminal ileum". Recommendation was for a colonscopy - which I haven't had done yet.

I'm searching for additional information, if anyone has had digestive issues after gallbladder removal. I don't feel my dr is supportive in helping me search for the best ways to find out what's happening to my gut.

Thanks so much.... 😉

  1. Hi , thanks for sharing your story! So sorry to hear that you are going through all this. I did not have issues post-gallbladder surgery, but I did have to get my gallbladder out in 2020 after I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2015. My doctor did not sense that the two were connected since I have family history of gallbladder issues. Do you feel that your issues might be connected to the surgery itself? -Eshani (IBD Team Member)

    1. It's quite possible that the surgery had something to do with it - scarring tissues might be the cause of the collapse of my colon.

My grandmother had polyps in her colon, which were removed during colonscopy. My cousin had her gallbladder removed as well. I feel like I have the variables against me and will not know until I have the colonscopy.

I was just curious if anyone had any experience with post-cholectystomy, leading to digestive issues.

      1. thank you for being here and posting your questions. Have you discussed this side effect with your medical provider? It seems like the two may be related, but since every patient is different, it might be best to double check with your doctor to be sure you are getting the right treatment and not suffering unnecessarily. Please keep us posted!

    2. Yes, I have; to which I am not necessarily feeling supported in the idea that both may be related. I want to find out why I'm having these issues and receive the correct treatment. I am hopeful the colonscopy will help reveal some insight.

      1. Hi , I totally hear you. I'm sorry you are not feeling supported by your doctors! Please keep us updated in regards to what the colonoscopy shows. In addition, I wanted to share our post about the causes of IBD in case that information helps: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/what-is-crohns-disease/causes -Eshani (IBD Team Member)
