Severe and permanent bloating

Hello, I've had moderate to severe UC now for the past 5 years and taking Vedolizimab which has kept it in check for the past 3+ years. It gave me my life back which is amazing.
However, over the past year or two I've experienced extreme bloating with gas from either end making life unbearable. I burp at least 500 times a day, which is pretty much constant and unaffected by what I eat or even if I eat. I have a hiatus hernia which certainly could affect this but I've had this my whole life and the bloating has escalated significantly over the past few years and now dominates my life. Does anyone else experience this and if so is there any diagnosis or treatment?
I have seen a few doctors, with the last one telling me I should just lose some weight as he didn't believe me that my stomach was so extended due to the bloating. I get so full of air that sometimes I vomit. When I can't burb for long enough I struggle not to vomit and try to get rid of air, but the pain is severe.
I decided to write this when I read a comment from a blog from someone saying they have severe and permanent bloating as well, which I thought was unique to me. Any help would be amazing.

  1. Hi . Your gas and bloating issue certainly sounds severe. I know a number of our patient leaders have had this issue. Traci wrote about her experience here: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/colitis-gas-bloating. This article from our editorial team also discusses gas and bloating: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/gas-bloating. Hopefully this information is helpful and others will chime in with their thoughts and experience.
I do want to add that every person deserves to be heard and have their symptoms taken seriously and I hope you can find a gastroenterologist who will listen to your issues. Best, Richard (Team Member)

    1. Thanks very much Richard. The suggestions are broadly what I've read regarding the condition but my condition seems to unaltered by diet. I've had gas/bloating pretty much my whole life but things have escalated considerably. I'll try to find another doctor who might be more receptive

  2. Hello, . Ugh, I am sorry to hear that you are dealing with this. It sounds incredibly uncomfortable and challenging! While I know that gas and bloating can be quite common with inflammatory bowel diseases, I hope that anyone who has experienced some as severe as you can connect with you here. I also wanted to second what Richard said about how you deserve to be heard and have your symptoms taken seriously. If it's feasible for you, you might want to consider seeking out a different doctor. One who will listen and support you and help you figure out a way for some relief! Please know this community is here for you. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    1. Thanks Christine, I am going to find another doctor now. I've seen a few to describe my symptoms so fingers crossed someone will be able to help at some point

      1. good for you! I'll keep my fingers crossed as well that a new doctor will help you get to the bottom of your symptoms. In the meantime, we're here any time, so please don't hesitate to reach out! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

    2. I had bloating issues , indigestion but problems with bloating mostly. Solution. No fast food, no more carbonated beverages, no sugar cereal. Lost 10 lbs , no issues anymore. On remicaid for years. Solved so many issues changing my diet. Blueberries daily..

      1. thanks so much for sharing what's been helpful in managing your bloating (and indigestion). With something like inflammatory bowel conditions, diet can definitely play a roll for people and their symptoms. It sounds like both diet and Remicade have helped you get some relief! Thanks so much for joining this conversation. Wishing you a gentle afternoon. -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)

      2. Hi . So glad you are doing so well. I noticed you mentioned blueberries. I don't know if this would be of interest to you, but our patient leader Julie Marie wrote here about her recipe for a blueberry hemp smoothie: https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/recipes/crohns-colitis-blueberry-smoothie. Wishing you continued success. Best, Richard (Team Member)
