Should I get a colonoscopy?

Six years ago I had chronic perianal abscesses for two years, during the last 6 months of that time I had diarrhea 10 + times a day. Had a colonoscopy done which was normal with normal biopsies. A few months later they found out I had a complex fistula. GI doc said “nothing I can do for you”. Ended up going to colorectal surgeon with a drain for a year and antibiotic cocktail. Finally resolved. Over the past few years I always have had on and off GI pain, diarrhea, bleeding of my three fissures that never went away. Fast forward to last month horrible diarrhea, pain, and had positive celiac serology but negative biopsies. Doctor says he wants to do colonoscopy to look for Crohn's again. I guess I’m asking has anyone had negative biopsies before and then it show up later during a colonoscopy? I don’t want to waste my time to hear it’s normal go suffer somewhere else.

  1. This is a really great question, and I'm hopeful others will chime in with their experiences! I have heard of cases where a colonoscopy has had indeterminate results. (https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/types-of-ibd/indeterminate-colitis/) But your symptoms sound pretty severe. Perhaps you could seek out a second opinion? And make sure the second opinion is by a GI specializing in IBD. Please keep us updated on how you're doing. Hoping you find some answers soon! - Pam (team member)

    1. Hello again! Someone just posted in this forum (linked below) and it reminded me that this conversation might be helpful for you- https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/topic/is-it-possible-to-have-ibd-and-not-show-up-on-colonoscopy/#post-17412 - Pam (team member)

  2. Hi . It sounds like you're having a particularly rough time at the moment! I am really sorry to hear that you're struggling.
I am actually usually the other way around, so the scope shows very little, but then biopsies show active inflammation!
I hope you get the answers you need to progress in your health journey!
You know your own body, so if you're not happy with the outcome, as Pam said, it may be worth a second opinion.

    1. Absolutely yes!!!!!
Even if nothing is bothering you at least you now have a basis!!!
      I’ve had 10 I think....you can do it!!!

      1. Hi ,

If it were me, I would. I already get a colonoscopy every 9-12 months depending on my levels and how I'm feeling. Beyond the biopsies, you may want to know how it's looking in there. It's so very annoying, but it's important that you and your team do as much to get as much information as possible. Keep us updated.
