Food triggers with UC

Which, if any, foods cause you the most trouble with Ulcerative Colitis?

  1. Of course diet is very personalized, but there were a few things that really bothered me when I had active UC before my colectomy. I was unable to tolerate red meat often, dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, & popcorn just to name a few.

    1. I totally avoid broccoli, brussel sprouts, potatoes, popcorn, nuts, caffeine, dairy, and meat (besides fish). Pork really messes with me.

I try to eat correct portions and hit all my macros. For example, for lunch I had fish, lima beans, and gluten free pasta. My meals arent always the most fun, but I feel fine eating it!

      1. That's great to hear. I love how honest you are about the meals not being fun but you feel good eating it. In the end, that's great that you stick with eating what is best for you and won't cause a flare. It is easier said than done. Props to you. I hope you are feeling well today, Elizabeth (team member)

    2. When in a flare - any veggies.

      1. I can relate. Corn can always be a tough one for me. I have to always be cautious. I hope you are doing well today. -Elizabeth (team member)

      1. I have found that commercial dairy from the supermarkets is a problem for sure. However, raw dairy is completely different and can be hugely beneficial for your IBD. I have been medication free from my Crohn's & Colitis for 4+ and consume raw goat milk dairy everyday. I recently made a video about why I do this that may be of use to you:

        I hope this helps!

      2. Hi . I'm glad you have been able to control your IBD. It is important to note, as discussed in this article from Harvard Health (https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/why-drinking-raw-milk-can-be-dangerous), particularly given the large number of people with IBD on immunosuppressant drugs, that consuming raw (unpasteurized) milk can be potentially dangerous, particularly for those with compromised immune systems. It is also important to note for anyone interested, and discussed further in the article, that it is illegal for raw milk to be sold across state lines and that many states also ban it or have other laws regulating it. Anyone considering consuming raw milk needs to know the risks and the laws before moving forward. Best, Richard (Team Member)
