Do immunosuppressants cause fatigue?

Hello. I have a diagnosis of UC and I am currently prescribed 50mg Azathioprine and also take mesalazines. I started this medication around 7 months ago now. I would say it has put me in remission, apart from suffering from fatigue daily. I am able to continue with normal activities, but it’s such an effort. The fatigue is not as bad as when suffering a flare up - but at least that fatigue comes and goes. This is constant.
I am always surprised when my bloods come back as normal as I feel there is something wrong with my body. I am now starting to think it’s the immunosuppressants causing the fatigue. I have read some anecdotal info about this online, but just wondered if anyone had personal experience also of this?
Thanks for any advice.

  1. I cannot speak about Azathioprine as I have not been prescribed it, but I do know that when I take Mesalamine (like I am currently), I do experience fatigue. Have you had your iron levels checked? I would definitely ask your physician to do that. Low iron levels can be a sign of anemia. Therefore, I would at least have your doctor check. A change in diet and/or medication can help. So, please reach out to your medical team to find out specifically what might be the cause. Sincerely--Traci, UC-IBD Team Member
