Gallbladder removal with crohns

Hello, i have gallbladder removal scheduled soon due to gallstone flare ups..i was also diagnosed with mild crohns disease about a year and a half ago. I am worried the loss of gallbladder coupled with crohns will be way to much diahhreah and bowel issues. Has anyone else had this done and how has it worked out for you?

  1. Hi . I can't personally speak on this issue, but as noted in this article from our editorial team, "For up to 50% of people with IBD, the liver or gallbladder are also affected:" https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/symptoms/inflammation-of-the-liver-and-bile-ducts. I have seen a number of community members mention gallbladder removal or cholecystectomy. There is research finding that Crohn's, in particular, can be worse following the surgery (see here for example: https://journals.lww.com/ajg/fulltext/2018/10001/impact_of_cholecystectomy_on_clinical_course_of.586.aspx). I'm not saying this would be your experience, but you may want to ask your gastroenterologist about this concern and, if you are to have the surgery, if there is a plan to combat any issues. Hopefully others will chime in with their experiences and thoughts. Please feel free to keep us posted on how you are doing and to ask additional questions. Best, Richard (Team Member)
