I have diverticular disease IBS recent ly bowel obstruction surgery.have to use an irrigation system to empty bowels also have chronic constipation see surgeon in two weeks hoping he suggests a stoma as can't continue like this I am ,66yrs old does anyone else have these problem s

  1. How did you go with your surgeon Jo? Hope you're feeling better now.

    1. Sergeon wasn't helpful and wasn't empathic to me. Said I had to lose 5 kilos and will see me in approximately 4 months time. I am still struggling with this problem and have been very depressed . If he doesn't help me when I see him next time I am asking to see someone else.

      1. @Jo hutch I am so sorry to hear you had that experience with your surgeon. Getting a second opinion is a wise decision, as seeing a doctor with whom you are comfortable is critical. Thank you for being here, and please keep us posted on how your journey continues.

      2. Hi , that is so frustrating. I think a lot of doctors equate weight with these issues, but it is often not correlated. Getting a second opinion sounds really smart, and even something you could do now instead of waiting for 4 months! Please do let us know how it continues to go. -Eshani (IBD Team Member)

    2. I saw my Gastroenterologist who told the surgeon that I needed a colostomy and I had my surgery done over 10 years ago and happy with my stoma.

      1. @Andree that is wonderful that you are so happy with your stoma many years later. Your quality of life is the most important thing to consider while living with this disease. I am happy to hear you are well.

      2. Thank you for sharing, ! I'm sure this is helpful to many people who are making the choice about a stoma. What kinds of adjustments did you need to make in your life after the stoma, if any? -Eshani (IBD Team Member)

    3. The most important one was that I didn't have to worry about finding the bathrooms when I went out to eat. I was back being a normal person where that was concerned.

      1. Wow, that is so great! I really hate that I have to be careful with where I go and what I do after eating. Glad you no longer have that experience! -Eshani (IBD Team Member)
