Taking antibiotics during flare
I was diagnosed with UC in 2005. One of the first things I was told was to only take antibiotics when absolutely necessary because it can aggravate the symptoms of your UC. I've had several doctors tell me that and all my research over the years. However, I had a laceration to my foot yesterday and I had to go get a tetanus shot at urgent care and the dr was worried about infection so prescribed augmentin. I'm currently having a flare, So I called my gastroenterologist leaving a message asking if I could take Augmentin while I'm experiencing a flare right now. his office called back and said yes there's no effect on your UC from antibiotics. That's contrary to everything I've understood for the last 17 years. Does anybody have anything to share on UC and antibiotics?

I have never heard this before. I have Crohn's and have numerous times had to take antibiotics even when in a flare and sometimes BECAUSE I was flaring. Was it a doctor that told you this? If so, maybe get clarification with them going forward, but I personally have never heard this.

from my experience, and from what I've heard from others, it's a very personal experience. Some antibiotics bother me and others don't.
