Fecal calprotectin

Hello everyone. I have been suffering for years with symptoms of IBD. Having colonoscopy next week. Can anyone tell me is a fecal calprotectin of 298 bad?

  1. My consultant said that generally over 150 is considered to be when they get concerned. 50 is normal. Presuming all hospitals use the same tests and measurements, 298 is worthy of being looked into, as it seems they are doing. Mine got to over 4,000 before I finally got a colonoscopy which confirmed IBD.
I hope your colonoscopy goes well and you feel better soon.

    1. From my results, this note:
Calprotectin in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can be five to several thousand times above the reference population (50 mcg/g or less). Levels are usually 50 mcg/g or less in healthy patients and with IBS.

      Reference Range:
      <50 Normal
      50-120 Borderline
      .120 Elevated

So your 298 is elevated. But if you have UC or Crohn's this number would be unsurprising. Speak with your doctor about action to take.

      1. I agree with what the others have said. Yes, 298 is elevated but the fact that you have this diagnosis, it is not surprising. I have been in the 4,000's before, during a horrific flare. My last results showed 750. Of course, our goal is to be in normal range but again, I wouldn't take your result as alarming. Are you on any treatment at the moment? Definitely to help this number go down you need to lower inflammation which could be done through diet, lifestyle change and supplementation. -Elizabeth (team member)
