Understanding Crohn's Flares

I have Crohn's. I am currently "in remission" using Entyvio. Recently I was certain I was in a flare, experiencing abdominal pain and cramping, the beyond fatigue and constant diarrhea that went on for days. I contacted my GI and was put on Prednisone (which I hate) and he scheduled colonoscopy. 5 1/2 weeks later he did a colonoscopy and was told I wasn't in a flare - showed no bowel damage, there was some inflammation, so it must be my IBS. I have never had a IBS event that felt like this and lasted that long. It was like I felt when I was hospitalized and diagnosed with Crohns and multiple times since. Also my labs were elevated as with previous flare. My question is it never a Crohns flare if they don't see damage. I'm confused about what a flare is then and how is a flare treated. I hadn't eaten anything that triggers my IBS but had tried taking Monjuaro but couldn't tolerate it and had quit taking it more than a month before. Sorry this my be more than one question.

  1. Hi . This is a great question and, unfortunately, as a non-medical professional I don't have a real answer. It would seem that if the inflammatory markers are elevated it is tough to say that what you experienced isn't a flare of the autoimmune condition. Being that you have both IBD and IBS, I wonder if it is not possible for an event to be a combination of the two. Inflammation that raises the markers in the blood and sets off the IBS, but doesn't show damage. I am, of course, just speculating, but wonder if it could be a question/scenario to ask your doctors about. Best, Richard (Team Member)
