Question about managing urgency

Hello all. I am new to this board, and ask forgiveness if this has been discussed before.

I was diagnosed with UC later in life as an adult in my 40s. Prior to this, I was diagnosed with proctitis in my late 20s. So, I understand a lot of the nerves around knowing where the next bathroom can be. I have what I consider to be a mild cases of colitis and am on medication.

I guess my question comes down to this. I take precautions, I watch what I eat (for the most part), and am generally know my body enough to know when I am going to have a bad day.

However, about 3-4 times a year I get hit like a ton of bricks out of nowhere with an intense urgency. As Murphy's Law would dictate, this is ALWAYS when I am stuck in a traffic jam, or when there is no restroom nearby. These cases almost always result in a mild accident at the very least.

So, when these intense urges hit you, is there ANYTHING you have done to give you another 1-2 minutes? As I am sure you are all aware, 1-2 minutes can be the difference between finding a restroom, or needing to change.

Thank you for reading, and your time.

  1. Hi , first I just want to welcome you to the community here, and thank you for joining. The frequency and urgency you mention, especially in those difficult-to-get-to-bathroom situations is one that the people of this community understand all too well. In fact, we have one health leader who has written about not making it to the bathroom before in an article I thought you might appreciate, https://inflammatoryboweldisease.net/living/disney-world-bathrooms. That being said, I hope some of our community members can share any tips or tricks they might have for giving themselves an extra 1-2 minutes, if at all possible. It does seem to be that it's almost like when the body knows a bathroom isn't accessible the urgency gets worse. (Not saying that's scientifically proven, just an experience that I think many here can relate to.) Please don't hesitate to reach out here any time, whether you have questions, need to vent, or could use some support. Welcome to the community! -- Warmly, Christine (Team Member)
